You might want to take a close look at how the hen stranglers were treated by their parents and their peers.

It takes a village to raise a sociopath.

what is wrong with people these days? Why are people so cruel? No one has respect for anyone anymore. This is so sad..

Must be related to the sociopaths who broke the neck of one of the gentle swans in the ponds at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco.

Prosecuting a 14 and 15 year old for childish actions is a stretch to me. There is a cultural disconnect between food production and consumption in our country that should be addressed instead of criminalizing such young people. Raising animals in school is a good start, but obviously not soon enough for the these students.
Prosecuting such young people will only alienate them, instead of educating.
If they want to learn to kill chickens humanely, they are welcome to join me at our ranch on harvest day. Learning the production process and true implications of eating meat is a is a positive option to the otherwise cruel process of prosecution.

also, sociopath is a very strong word for such a young person.

Prosecute them, of course! It is unbelievable that anyone could think that there was another alternative to these two barbaric teenage idiots. I wanted to use another word (for "idiots" but, unlike these two boys, I choose to live life in a dignified way and also choose to allow our animals to live this way too). Parents are should not be the knee-jerk excuse or rationalization for choices a couple of warped, cold human beings so disgustingly did here.

Prosecute these two cold, heartless, stupid teenage boys and quit the stupid attempt(s) to rationalize their disgusting behavior on their parents.

They obviously did it out of pure evil intent. Not for food. Also, teenage boys at 14 and 15 know what they are doing. This was not childish behavior. They need to be punished for this !!
